Offered for sale is a very rare early German Fahrtenmesser (youth/hiking knife), manufactured by Anton Wingen Jr. of Solingen, one of the most renowned blade-making centers in Germany. This example dates to the very beginning of youth knife production and represents one of the earliest forms specifically intended for children and young users. Such knives were produced in relatively limited numbers and are today encountered far less frequently than the standard Hitlerjugend knives.
A distinctive feature of this knife is its rounded (non-pointed) blade tip, reflecting its early purpose as a safer knife for youth use and making it particularly significant from a historical standpoint. These early designs later influenced the development of the more standardized patterns of the 1930s.
This type of knife is described as a “Wandermesser für Burschen und Mädels” (hiking knife for boys and girls), confirming its intended role in youth and scouting environments. The knife features a well-preserved, unsharpened blade, a classic handle with checkered grip plates, and an original metal scabbard with a leather hanger. Overall condition is very good, with honest age-related wear.
It is important to note that the knife is smaller than a standard Hitler Youth knife, which is clearly shown in the comparison photos.
A rare, early, and hard-to-find piece, highly desirable for advanced collectors of historical edged weapons and militaria.
