This piece is a very fine Bavarian Hirschfänger, a traditional German hunting dagger with distinctive artistic decoration, executed in the classic style.

The blade is in perfect condition, featuring an outstanding mirror polish. The surface is exceptionally clean, with no signs of corrosion, pitting, or any damage whatsoever. The geometry is fully preserved, and the tip retains its correct shape and perfect symmetry.

The blade is richly decorated with elaborate etched designs along its full length. Particularly striking are the hunting scenes depicting deer and hounds, elegant floral scrollwork, and a heraldic composition, all of which give the piece a highly attractive and presentation-worthy appearance.

One side of the blade bears the classic German hunting motto:

“Das ist des Jägers Ehrenschild,

dass er beschützt und hegt sein Wild”

(“It is the hunter’s badge of honor to protect and preserve his game.”)

The maker’s mark is clearly visible:

GÜNTER BASTIAN

SOLINGEN

indicating manufacture in Solingen, the renowned German center of edged weapon production.

The hilt is executed with great artistic taste. Special attention should be given to the lion’s head pommel, which is finely detailed, with the mane, facial features, and decorative elements all beautifully rendered. This style is characteristic of quality presentation and hunting examples.

The scabbard is original, finished in green, which is characteristic of Bavarian hunting pieces. The metal fittings are well preserved. The throat fitting bears a decorative crowned emblem, further emphasizing its regional identity and distinguished character.

This is a highly attractive Bavarian Hirschfänger in excellent collector’s condition, and it would make a worthy addition to any serious collection of German hunting edged weapons.
