Original Iron Cross 2nd Class, manufactured by Alois Rettenmaier, Schwäbisch Gmünd. Classic three-piece construction with magnetic iron core, maker marked with PK code "16" on the suspension ring.
This particular cross stands out due to a unique field modification made by its original wearer — a Knight’s Cross recipient. In frontline conditions, the owner adapted this 2nd Class Iron Cross to be worn around the neck, imitating the prestigious Knight’s Cross. A makeshift loop was hand-fashioned and attached, while the ribbon was reworked for neck wear. Traces of an elastic strap, once used to hold the ribbon tightly around the neck, are still visible on the upper edges.
A very interesting and rare example of a soldier’s personal battlefield adaptation, connected to a Knight’s Cross bearer.
