This Early Schinkel Form Iron Cross First Class is an appealing example of this hard-to-find and very desirable variant. This is an early, one-piece cross, in the same “Schinkel Form” pattern used for Imperial crosses. This pattern of cross was manufactured before the typical three-piece 1939 cross was standardized. This one is unmarked, but this variant is attributed to the firm of Otto Schickle. The textured core retains most of the original factory applied black paint. The frame and beading show slight wear and age. On the reverse, this Early Schinkel Form Iron Cross retains textbook hardware for this type. The attachment pin is functional, and there are no signs of repair. The mild patina on the back nicely matches the front, and the piece has an all-original, uncleaned look overall. This is a very rare cross, missing from most collections. The condition of this one rates as excellent.
